Special issue of the newspaper Woodland Krasnoyarye.

This publication covers ROLL forest projects carried out in Krasnoyarsk Krai from 1998 to 2001. Thanks to ROLL Program a mechanism for promoting and introducing effective low-cost forest protection projects was put in place in this region. The  experience of all ROLL forest projects is now being replicated in other regions of Siberia and European Russia.

This publication describes the successful experience of a ROLL project in introducing environmentally friendly and economically effecive techniques for growing plantations of cranberry on spent bogs. A series of publications in the Reserve Islands Newspaper (Moscow, 2003) devoted to Nature Reserve Seminary as an Instrument of Engaging Schoolchildren in Environmental Activities on Protected Areas - a project of the Nature Reserves (Zapovedniki) Center carried out in 2001-2002 with funding from the ROLL Program.

The team of this project decided to bring together scattered initiatives and projects devoted to working with children on PNAs and form a national environmental movement entitled Friends of Reserve Islands. Thirty specialists from nature reserves and national parks were trained at the Zapovedniki Environmental Center to become the founders of this movement in the regions by implementing projects they had designed during the training. This project is now successfully continuing after the end of ROLL funding. Thus, two national-scope meetings of Friends of Reserve Islands joined by the young participants in the Friends of Reserve Islands Movement were held in 2001 and 2003.

This article contains a detailed account of the achievements of ROLL energy-efficiency projects fulfilled in the Volga Federal District.

The projects created significant, ongoing savings in energy costs and have proved that pooling the efforts of non-governmental organizations, municipalities, and businesses can solve some of the most difficult issues that involve the technical and social infrastructures of Russian society.

These articles are about the issue of building the Russia-China oil pipeline (by YUKOS and Transneft oil companies). This question was finally settled with much help from the Baikal Public Environmental Expertise Center that was established as a result of the implementation of a ROLL project “Establishment of Public Environmental Expertise Centers” in 1997 under the auspices of the Buryatia Regional Association on Lake Baikal. Up to date, this Center is continuing its activities in coordinating public expertise of projects to build gas and oil pipelines on the territory of the Republic of Buryatia.

A series of small newspaper pieces written by a ROLL project participant G.Sapozhnikova was presented for the contest. These publications give one an idea of the activities of a ROLL project “Household Waste – A Source of Secondary Materials” which resulted in the appearance in the city of Pushchino of a system of separate household waste collection.

This article is devoted to a ROLL project that visibly demonstrated the advantages of ecological insurance as an effective incentive promoting modern economic development. Thanks to this project – Practical Activities to Introduce Environmental Insurance and Audits in the Republic of Bashkortostan – the successful experience of insurance companies and industrial plants of Moscow and Leningradskaya oblasts was adapted in this republic.

“How to Find a Feather of the Fire Bird?”

This article describes the experience of a ROLL project that put in place a system for recycling solid household waste in a rural municipality using the resources of the local government. This system involves 7 villages located in the Valdaisky National Park, some of which are situated on the banks of Lake Borovno (1,003 hectares), which is a source of drinking water for local residents. Special sites for storing waste were arranged, waste removal schedules were drawn up, and information activities were carried out among the local public, village headmen, and the management of the national park.
